How to Negotiate with Wedding Vendors

negotiate with wedding vendors

As people plan their [tag]weddings[/tag], they sometimes fall into the trap of thinking that wedding vendors are in the business of making dreams come true, and that dreams are necessarily expensive. Both are untrue. Wedding vendors are in the business of making a profit and what they sell can generally be had at a lower price. You can negotiate with wedding vendors.

How to Price a Wedding Cake

How to price a wedding cake There’s no getting around it: [tag]weddings[/tag] are expensive. Just about everything you’ll need is going to be expensive. That said, brides, grooms, and their loved ones often get stuck with more than they bargained for when it comes to the price of the cake. Because you don’t purchase a lot of [tag]multi-tiered cakes[/tag] that serve hundreds of people, you may not know exactly what to look for. Here are some helpful hints.

First, it’s good to know how the baker arrives at his (or her) price. In general, he will charge a base rate for each serving, depending on how complicated your cake is, and multiply that by the number of servings you need. Servings can be priced anywhere from as low as $2 to as high as $10, but $4-$6 is fairly standard. It’s important to remember that the price per serving can go up as the cake gets bigger. This means that a cake designed to serve 400 people is likely to cost more than twice as much as the same basic cake designed to serve 200 people. It’s simply more difficult for the baker to stabilize, frost, and transport the cake. You probably shouldn’t trim your guest list to reduce the number of servings, but it’s still something you should know.

wedding dressEvery [tag]bride[/tag] takes time to find the PERFECT dress. We try on our dress numerous times leading up to the big day but then after the cash is spent, the champagne is done, the band has wrapped up and you and hubby have said “I do” and enjoyed your honeymoon…what are the plans for your [tag]wedding dress[/tag]?

No worries - we’ve compiled our top 5 ideas of what brides do with their wedding dress after the wedding.

First things first, no matter what your plans are, you have to have your dress cleaned first, so we didn’t included that in our top 5 list.

  1. Have it preserved and keep it as a keepsake. If you have a daughter she may want to use your dress (as her “something old” or her “something borrowed”). There’s no guarantee that your daughter will want to wear your wedding dress, but it’s worth a shot.
  2. Donate your wedding dress to a deserving charity. Some charities, auction or sell wedding dresses and donate the proceeds to a particular benefit (i.e. Cancer Society, etc.)

Who Else Wants To Save Money On Their Wedding Day?

save money on your wedding dayAccording to a recent VISA survey, two-thirds of American couples over spend on their wedding day. Yikes! Here are a few wedding planning tips and hints that may keep you out of the poor house.

1. Edit your guest list. Usually, your first attempt at a list of invited guests is way too big. Take a closer look at the list and make cuts. Who can you exclude from the list without any unwanted drama? Who will definitely come and who is a maybe? Who will bring a gift, who won’t? Just joking :)
2. Cupcake wedding cake. A fairly new fad is to have cupcakes as your wedding cake. This is usually less expensive than the traditional three or more tiered wedding cakes. Plus you can have more of an accurate count for how many cupcakes you would need to order. With a traditional [tag]wedding cake[/tag] it is more of a guessing game.

3. Choose your day wisely. Usually brides don’t like to get married on a weekday, but if you absolutely need to save a few bucks you should. Venues will usually charge you much less if you are scheduling a wedding on a weekday or on a Sunday.

4. Dry wedding. If you need to save some money, try having a dry wedding with no alcoholic beverages. You may not get to see your crazy uncle dance that night but you will save that money from the drinks.
